FUNCTIONAL NATIVENESS IN OUTER CIRCLE (OC) AND EXPANDING CIRCLE

(EC). Reshmi D-Flanders

As stated in Kachru and Smith (2008: 179), Biases and prejudices in favour of the so-called native speaker have been focused upon and challenged and arguments have been presented to show how genetic nativeness is being challenged by functional nativeness . in all the circles. In this article I explore this functional nativeness in the clause elements like theme and rheme (Halliday, 1994). It is hypothesised that unlike the rheme in the inner circle English, in the expanding circle it is the complex theme structure that serves as a point of departure of the message in a clause. Such sentence structure changes the order of the given new message in a clause. Could this practice be cultural, or deliberate? In order to carry out this analysis, I use the idea of culture and context to understand the complex thematic element/s in clauses.
